Pregnancy Exercises- Fun, Safe Exercises to Do with Your Children

To Sara of Fit by Sara: “I have 2 children 9 and 6. I am a single mother, expecting my 3rd child. I  am about 5 months pregnant. I have read every book on expectant mother exercises. They are so boring. I want to do exercises ( activities) that my children can do with me. We currently walk, swim, and play baseball. My daughter loves to hula hoop. Is it safe to hula hoop when pregnant? Do you have
any other  suggestions for fun exercises with my children, that are safe for me?”

From Sara of Fit by Sara: “It’s so great that you’re staying active during your pregnancy.  Studies have found that exercising while pregnant typically results in healthier weight gain, easier labor, and quicker bounce back. You can continue to do most activities as long as it feels comfortable in your body.  For example since you enjoy hula hoop, you can do it as long as you can, but soon enough your belly will get in the way! The only exercises I would avoid all together would be exercises where you could potentially fall like biking and or rollerblading.   The other exercises that you are currently doing are great during pregnancy, especially walking and swimming since you can continue to do them till the end of your pregnancy.  Have you tried yoga?  Yoga is another great exercise you can do from the beginning of your pregnancy till the end.  It’s excellent for improving muscle tone, strength, flexibility, provides deeper connection with baby and the breath work can result in easier labor.  I’ve had clients who have done my prenatal yoga DVD’s and their kids follow along with them, enjoying it just as much!”
