Postpartum Weight Loss- Eating Before or After Exercise

To Sara of Fit by Sara: “When I wake up in the morning I’m starving, but I don’t know whether it’s ok to eat before I exercise if I want to lose weight.  What are your thoughts, eat before or after exercise?”

From Fit by Sara: “First things first, you should eat if your body is hungry!  If you deprive your body you won’t function as well, and when you come back from exercising you will likely eat a large portion of food which will hinder your progress towards your weight loss goals.  I recommend if you’re hungry to eat a light breakfast prior to exercising such as Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal with lowfat milk, or a yogurt w/ Grapenuts cereal.  If you’re not hungry when you wake up, then exercise first and when you feel hungry eat!  The key to feeling and looking your best is to honor your hunger cues and eat when you’re hungry.  Just be aware of your portion size if you eat before you exercise so you don’t end up with a cramp.” -Sara Holliday MFT, CPT
