Many people get tricked into thinking it’s a wise “diet” decision to grab a smoothie instead of a sandwich, but the fact is it’s better to eat your food instead of drink it. The problem with a smoothie is it’s full of fructose (fruit sugar) which will give you a temporary sugar boost, and temporary sense of being full, however shortly after you may feel sluggish and hungry. Also a small smoothie has at least 300 calories. On the other hand, if you chose a turkey avocado and cheese sandwich, it may have equal (half a sandwich) or more calories, but the combination of fat, protien, and carbs will keep you fuller longer, and you’ll be less likely to experience a suddend low energy. So when possible eat your food, don’t drink it! – Sara Holliday MFT, CPT
