Postpartum Weight Loss: Why Yoga is Good for You

To Sara of Fit by Sara: “I know that yoga is supposed to be good for me, but I don’t understand why. Can you explain the why???”

If you’re looking for positive changes physically, mentally, and spiritually then you will find what you need with yoga. In yoga you hold postures that stretch the muscles which results in longer, leaner muscles. In addition certain types of yoga like Vinyasa (my favorite) will get your heart rate up so you burn a lot of calories and lose body fat. In yoga the focus is linking your breath with your movement. The deep breathing repeated in yoga relaxes the mind resulting in an increase in calm and a decrease in stress. In addition to learner longer muscles and a calmer mind, a good yoga instructor  may remind you to focus on being  present, to breath in positive messages such as “I am calm” or single words such as “Joy”, and will suggest having gratitude for all that’s good in your life- all of which results in a feeling of peace in spirit. -Sara Holliday MFT, CPT
