Postpartum Weight Loss- Obsessing Over the Number on The Scale

To Sara of Fit by Sara: “I thought I was making great progress with my weight loss (my pants are loser and I feel more toned) until I went to my doctor and stepped on the scale.  My weight actually went up 3 lbs.  from my morning weight! I know I’m obsessing over the number on the scale, but I don’t know what to do differently.  Any suggestions?”

From Fit by Sara: There are a couple of important things to consider when it comes to weighing yourself. 1. time of day 2. type of scale.  Weighing yourself in the morning is the best time because you’ve rid most of your fluids.  If you weigh later in the day, your weight may fluctate from 1-3 lbs!  Also if you weighed yourself on your scale, it may be calibrated differently than the scale in your doctor’s office.  In order to make progress (especially mentally) I highly recommend that you weigh yourself much less.  Once a week (or less) is sufficient.  What’s important is how your clothes are fitting and how you’re feeling.  If you’re noticing a difference in your pant size, and enjoying some new muscle tone, that’s what REALLY counts! –Sara Holliday MFT, CPT
