To Sara of Fit by Sara: “I’m a healthy eater most of the time, but I have trouble curbing my late night snacking, and I have a feeling this is what is stopping me from losing my extra weight. Any ideas how to cut back?”
From Fit by Sara: “You’re right, late night snacking can be a big contributor to weight gain. When we eat late/ close to bed time, when we go to sleep our metabolism slows down and thus we don’t burn as many calories. I eat dinner early with my kids (around 5 p.m.) so I too am often hungry by 8:30- 9 p.m.. What I found that works great is a cup of hot chocolate w/ lowfat milk or a hot decaf tea w/ lowfat milk. Both fill me up and the warmth is very soothing. It’s also been shown that having warm milk prior to bed can aide in digestion for a good night’s sleep. ” –Sara Holliday MFT, CPT
