Prenatal Weight Gain- Fear of Gaining More Weight

To Sara of Fit by Sara: “I’m already 20 lbs. overweight and just found out I’m pregnant.  I’m thrilled to be pregnant, but am scared I’m going to gain too much weight.  Any suggestions?”

From Fit by Sara: “Congrats on your pregnancy.  It’s normal to have concerns about gaining weight when you’re pregnant, however this is the time to focus on having a healthy pregnancy vs. the number on the scale (which can be challenging because you’ll be weighed at each doctor’s visit).  Assuming you have a healthy pregnancy and have been given permission by your doctor to exercise, you should exercise, and regularly. Walking, yoga, and swimming are great prenatal exercises that will keep pregnancy pains to a minimum and assure you gain a healthy pregnancy weight. Also focus on nourishing your body with healthy food that wil help you baby grow, while fueling your body w/ good energy.  As long as you exercise regularly and eat healthy you will gain the right amount of weight and losing the baby weight after will not be as challenging. –Sara Holliday MFT, CPT
