Postpartum Weight Loss- Signs of Over Training

To Sara of Fit by Sara: “I started exercising consistently about a month ago. I workout 6 days a week. I’m really excited about trying new classes but my shoulders have started bothering me and I’ve been exhausted the last couple of workouts. I just got into this routine and have lost 5 inches and 10 lbs, I don’t want to stop my progress. Any advice?”

“Congrats on your success! Sore shoulder and exhaustion sounds like you are over training to me. It’s really important to listen to your body because the most common reasons for quiting exercise are due to injury and burn out. If your shoulders are bothering you and you are exhausted then you are over doing it.  It’s important to give your body a little break of one to two days to allow the muscles to recooperate (grow and build tone).  Plus the down time will give you the energy you need to have a great workout vs. giving less to a workout because of exhaustion. Start listening to your body and take at least a day or two off, vary your routine w/ cardio, weight training, interval training and or yoga and you’ll have fun without risk of injury or burnout.” -Sara Holliday MFT, CPT
