Postpartum Weight Loss- Fighting Cravings

To Sara of Fit by Sara: “I want to lose weight, but I can’t seem to fight my cravings for salty and sweet.  What should I do?”

From Fit by Sara: Cravings typically occur when 1. we are hungry- we crave salty 2. our bodies are “needing” something-we crave sweet.  Cravings due to hunger occur because we typically wait too long to eat and our bodies want a quick pick me up.  Thus we reach for quick and easy chips and other processed high fat, high salt foods.  Our other “sweet” craving is typically occurs when our blood sugar gets low.  The first step to keep your cravings under control is to eat when your body is hungry, and stay hydrated with water.  Learn your bodies hunger signals, eat more often, yet choose small meals that will keep your blood sugar stabilized.  Keep healthy snacks in baggies with you always, such as whole grain cereals, lightly salted nuts, apples with mozerella cheese, and carrots.  When you keep hydrated and your blood sugar stabilizes your cravings will subside. So when you have a treat it’s a treat and not a craving. –Sara Holliday MFT, CPT
