Postpartum Weight Loss- Eating the Right Portion of Food

To Sara of Fit by Sara: “I know that in order to lose weight I need to cut down on my portion size, but how do I know how much to cut down?”

From Fit by Sara: “Yes, in order to lose weight you need to cut down on the amount of calories consumed and or expend calories through exercise.  I recommend instead of worrying about the right portion, focus on making simple changes.  For example, when you get your plate of food for dinner, take a portion that you want to eat.  Before getting another portion of food, drink a full glass of water, get up from the table and ask yourself, “Am I really hungry or is just that it tastes good?” Often we eat more than what we should simply because it tastes good, not because we are really hungry.  Another simple change is to drink a glass of water before you eat your meal.  This will assure that you are really hungry vs. dehydrated.  If you are still hungry you’ll be less likely to consume as much because you hydrated your body first.  Another quick tip: look at your plate of food, more than half of it should be dark leaf salad or colorful veggies, the other portion should consist of a protien no larger than the back of your fist (ex: fish or lean meat), and a carbohydrate (ex: rice, pasta, whole wheat bread). Simple changes like these can result in great gains without feeling deprived. Enjoy!” -Sara Holliday MFT, CPT
