Postpartum Weight Loss: Combining Foods to Satisfy Your Hunger

To Sara of Fit by Sara: “I’ve read your posts about listening to my body and eating when I’m hungry, and have noticed that I’m eating about 5 small meals per day, but I keep getting hungry quickly afterwards. What am I doing wrong?”

“My guess is your missing something with your combination of foods. For example if you eat a small to moderate portion of meat it should be combined with a whole grain (such as bread, pasta or rice) or vegetables. If you are only eating protien and not enough carbs you will quickly digest the food and get hungry. Another common problem is eating fruit by itself. Fruit (a carbohydrate) is full of natural sugar which will increase your blood sugar and can make you hungry. I recommend combining a fruit with a protien such as peanut butter or low-fat cheese. This combo of carbs with protien will satisfy your hunger and will digest slower keeping you satisfied longer. The thing to remember is to always combine a protien with a carb. A protien can be nuts, cheese, meat and or soy products. A carb can be veggies, fruit, whole grain bread, pasta or rice.” -Sara Holliday MFT, CPT
